How are blood banks regulated in Pakistan?
Blood banks in Pakistan are overseen by:
· The National Blood Transfusion Programme at the federal level (policy and coordination).
· Provincial blood transfusion authorities (e.g., Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority, Punjab authorities, others) that license and inspect blood banks in their regions.
These authorities:
· Decide minimum standards for staffing, equipment, testing, storage and documentation.
· Issue and renew licenses for blood banks that meet these standards.
· Inspect facilities and can suspend or close unsafe or unlicensed blood banks.
Any place that collects blood from donors, tests, stores, or transfuses blood/blood components is supposed to have a valid license from the relevant authority.
