What role do international accreditations (like AABB or ISO) play?
Some Pakistani blood centers (for example, large NGOs or teaching hospitals) pursue international accreditation such as:
· AABB (Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies) standards.
· ISO 15189 (medical laboratories) or ISO 9001 (quality management).
These accreditations:
· Are not legally required but show a high level of commitment to quality and safety.
· Involve external audits, continuous improvement and adherence to detailed technical standards.
A blood bank can be safe and licensed without such accreditations, but if a center has them, it is usually a strong signal of good practice.
