What standards must a licensed blood bank follow in Pakistan?
Licensed blood banks must comply with:
· The National Blood Transfusion & Blood Products Policy of Pakistan, which sets broad goals for safety, quality and voluntary donation.
· Technical guidelines and standards issued by the National Blood Transfusion Programme and provincial authorities (e.g., SBTA standards and guidelines).
· Legal requirements such as the Sindh Safe Blood Transfusion Act, Islamabad ordinances, and equivalent laws in other regions.
These standards cover:
· Donor selection and deferral criteria.
· Mandatory infection testing (HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and often malaria and other local risks).
· Proper storage temperatures and shelf‑lives.
· Staff training and documentation.
· Reporting of serious transfusion reactions and adverse events.
