Study Explores Link Between Blood Type and Heart Disease Risk

A new study has examined the potential link between ABO blood types and cardiovascular disease risk in hemodialysis patients, a group that faces a significantly higher risk of heart-related complications and mortality than the general population.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among people undergoing dialysis. While previous research has suggested that individuals with blood type O may have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease in the general population, less was known about whether the same association applies to patients receiving hemodialysis.

Researchers led by Dr. Masafumi Kurajoh of Osaka Metropolitan University’s Graduate School of Medicine conducted a large-scale prospective cohort study involving 1,671 hemodialysis patients from 17 medical facilities in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Participants were followed for approximately five years to assess associations between ABO blood type and all-cause, cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality.

During the follow-up period, 464 patients died, including 278 deaths linked to cardiovascular disease. The researchers found that patients with blood type A were associated with lower risks of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. However, ABO blood type was not significantly associated with non-cardiovascular deaths, including those caused by infections or cancer.

The findings differ from observations in the general population, where blood type O has often been associated with lower cardiovascular risk. Researchers noted that factors such as differences in von Willebrand factor (VWF) and factor VIII, which are involved in blood clotting, are unlikely to fully explain the association observed among hemodialysis patients.

Dr. Kurajoh said the findings do not currently support changing treatment or prevention strategies based on blood type. However, understanding why blood type A was linked to lower cardiovascular mortality among dialysis patients could provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease and potentially inform future preventive and therapeutic approaches.

The study highlights the need for further research into the relationship between blood type, cardiovascular risk and hemodialysis outcomes. The findings were published in Kidney International Reports.
